Third ATV Test

June 2001

Great Meadow, VA

The rebuilt TV payload flew again on top of Jerry O'Sullivan's "Murpy's Law" using a J-415 at a NOVAAR launch.

It was a very clear & beautiful day, with the sun almost directly overhead and a few scattered cumulus clouds. Unfortunately, we forgot to put the payload sheer pins in, which caused the ATV payload to dislodge and deploy its recovery chute at about 4500 feet. Instead of returning quickly via dual deployment, the ATV payload drifted very slowly down (it was a big chute to ensure a "gentle" landing) for about 10 minutes, unfortunately landing well over a mile away. It was finally located several hours later on the other side of a swamp and two tree lines through radio direction finding by using a yagi antenna and a scanner tuned to the center TV frequency.

The video on tape looks better than the .mpg file, which is compressed after conversion. We decided after this flight that the electronics were ready to go into the Terrier-Sandhawk two stage flight, and that we needed to record to a much better VCR as well as directly recording to a hard disk via real time .mpg compression.
